Tournament structure question

I saw in the practice tournaments that the number of matches played per tournament would change when the number of competitors did not. E.g. 16 August my bot played 5 games, 23 August my bot played 6. And the number of bots was 14 on both days (from the leaderboard)

I saw on an older post that bots would run in extra matches to fill out the games, but in the practice tournament it seems like those extra games were being counted towards the final score at the end

Was this the case for tournament 2 or was the tournament structure different to the practices?

I don’t need specifics, just something that’s bugging me

Thanks

Fairness above all else :face_with_peeking_eye:

Hey @ScottSchultz, yeah we make sure every bot plays against every other bot. Sometimes an extra match is required to ensure that. The extra game is counted.

I think the issue that Scott might have here is:

if Bot A plays 6 Matches,
And Bot B plays 5

Lets say Bot A wins 3 matches and places second 3 times,
and Bot B wins 5 matches,

Bot A will have: 21 points, 3x first, 3x second.
Bot B will have 20 points,

So if an uneven amount of matches is being tallied,

Its possible for a player to have a score advantage caused by an extra match.

You could score bots on points obtained over max points as a percentage.

So if player 1 played 6 matches, and player 2 played 5,

In the end have the score obtained as a percentage.

In my example:
Bot A had 21 points out of a max of: 24 points. Their score ratio = 87,5 Percent points obtained
Bot B had 20 points out of their possible 20 points. Their score ratio is 100%,

In the event where Bot A is granted an extra match,
They can outrank Bot B with an extra match, (Assuming one of their losses was Bit B as well. )

I dont know what is going on behind the actual event, scoring or any of that, and I do respect the rulings,
But I do want to just give a case against:
“Sometimes an extra match is required to ensure that. The extra game is counted.”

For the top bots it probably doesn’t matter much,
But for the bots ranked 6th - 10th it will be huge.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks @WillieTheron, that’s exactly the point I am trying to make

I’ll expand on my case using that percentage scoring to better illustrate.

16 August - 5 games played

My bot got → 2, 1, 3, 2, 3 = 14 points out of 20 = 70%
Result = 6th place (tied 6th, 5th)

23 August - 6 games played

My bot got → 2, 1, 3, 2, 3, 2 = 17 points of 24 = 70.8%
Result = 4th place (tied 2nd, 3rd, 4th)

Bot performance was the same, but results differ

So I am just theorizing at this point (because I can’t see results from the tournaments or know how many games other bots played)

So I have no idea if in tournament 2:
My bot was just average and didn’t make it,
Or it was close competition and it got unlucky by not playing an extra game

Hey @ScottSchultz, yeah that is an oversight on our part. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. We’ll investigate and revert back soonest
